Exploring Lepenski Vir: Europe's Oldest Urban Site - Ancient Neolithic Village & Its Mysteries
Join me for an exciting visit to Lepenski Vir, one of Europe's oldest and most intriguing Neolithic sites in Serbia's stunning Iron Gates region. Please visit our website to get more information: https://www.intothedustarchaeology.com/ This ancient village, inhabited from 9900 BC to 6000 BC, offers a unique glimpse into early urban life and the transition from hunter-gatherer societies to farming communities. Discover the strange fishmen sculptures and trapezoidal houses that make this site fascinating. Explore the Djerdap National Park, which has a rich history, natural beauty, and nearby attractions like Roman ruins and medieval fortresses. • The site is located in Djerdap National Park, around a 2-hour drive east of the Serbian capital of Belgrade. • The village was inhabited for some 4,000 years, from approximately 9900 BC to 6000 BC. This straddles the Mesolithic and Neolithic periods, when people moved from hunter-gathering to farming lifestyles, and includes a major migration of people into the area. This makes the site unique and important to study. • Moreover, some bizarre features include strange ‘fishmen’ sculptures and regular trapezoidal floor plans for the houses. • Despite its controversial move to higher ground due to a dam project in the 1970s, the site is well-preserved for visitors, and the museum is fun and informative. • If you have time, visit the other sites in and around the park, including fortresses, Roman ruins, natural stone archways, and monasteries. A boat ride and a car are essential. With an extra day, head south to the Negotin wine region. ✅ References: https://www.nature.com/articles/s4159... https://www.nature.com/articles/natur... https://www.researchgate.net/publicat... ⏰Timestamp: 0:00 – Introduction to Serbia and Lepenski Vir 1:42 – Djerdap National Park 3:20 – History of Lepenski Vir 5:33 – Layout of Lepenski Vir village and houses 10:46 – Modern discovery and excavation of Lepenski Vir 13:54 – Recent research regarding Lepenski Vir 16:48 – Visiting Lepenski Vir 18:59 – Excerpt from Lepenski Vir onsite video 20:16 – Touristy activities and sites in and around Djerdap 23:48 – Negotin wine villages Rogljevo and Rajac 26:26 – Conclusion This video is about Exploring Lepenski Vir: Europe's Oldest Urban Site - Ancient Neolithic Village & Its Mysteries.
