Perhaps you're even currently suffering from high cholesterol yourself. It's not uncommon for doctors to prescribe a medication to lower cholesterol, in addition to measures such as increased exercise and a change in diet. Simvastatin and atorvastatin are well-known examples. Why is high cholesterol bad for me anyway? Of course, you don't notice the effects directly. This isn't like, say, a knife cut, where you immediately feel the pain and see the blood. High cholesterol levels are more insidious: You don't notice any negative effects for a long time, often a very long time, until it's too late. However, persistently high cholesterol levels in the blood, or more specifically, too much LDL cholesterol, are a risk factor for the development of so-called atherosclerosis. This condition is also called "hardening of the arteries." It can even lead to a heart attack or stroke. What side effects can occur from cholesterol-lowering drugs? Side Effect No. 1: Muscle Pain A side effect of statins and fibrates in particular can be muscle pain or fatigue. This side effect occurs in up to 30% of cases. This is also a common reason why patients stop taking their cholesterol-lowering drugs. Side Effect No. 2: Rhabdomyolysis A rare side effect of statins and fibrates is rhabdomyolysis. It occurs in less than 1 in 1,000 patients. However, if it does occur, it should definitely be treated by a doctor. This involves the literal disintegration of skeletal muscle tissue. Side Effect No. 3: Indigestion 1) Nausea, 2) constipation, and 3) other gastrointestinal complaints are also side effects that can accompany cholesterol-lowering drugs. They can occur with almost all cholesterol-lowering drugs. However, there are differences in how frequently these occur within each drug group. Statins, for example, are generally well tolerated; gastrointestinal complaints rarely occur with them. Side Effect No. 4: Increased Liver Values Many cholesterol-lowering drugs can cause an increase in liver values, more specifically, in transaminase levels. Side Effect No. 5: Increased Risk of Diabetes? Statins carry a risk of promoting type 2 diabetes mellitus. This has been studied for several years. In 2017, a meta-analysis was conducted and many studies were evaluated. The result: The risk of developing diabetes increased by 9 to 13% when taking statins.
