We're talking about the different rooms in a Japanese apartment and how they're divided. For example, there's a separate room for the toilet and a separate room for the bathtub or shower. There are also almost always one or more rooms with tatami (bamboo mats). Families in Japan also tend to live more in one room, as sliding doors often don't provide a real divider, so it's less common for children or individual family members to be completely isolated from the others. Although this naturally varies from apartment to apartment, and families with a little more money can also set up something like a children's room.
