A High Visibility Summer Dry Fly! Neon Nomad (Mini Golden Stone) Dry Fly Fly Tying Video Tutorial
There are smaller Golden Stoneflies (we're talking sz. 12 - 14), that are prevalent on my home waters. They hatch mid June to Mid July. In some years the water is too high to even think about fishing when these guys are hatching, but, in years like this, they are hatching right when the water temps and flows are perfect for fishing. There are some flies that would work OK for these (think a small tan stimulator, or a small tan chubby), but I like to tinker, and come up with something that has some realism but is also durable and fishable. I was looking for an easy to see fly that would float all day and would hold up a dropper with a 3.0mm tungsten bead; not a simple task in smaller sizes. Enter the Neon Nomad. This fly is like a cross between Swisher's PMX and Sickles Foam is Home Stone. It's got some "attractor" qualities (UV materials), rubber legs, flash, etc., but has realism as well, with the segmented foam body and the congo hair wing that provides a great silhouette. I got the chance to fish this the other day, and it performed extremely well. It held up my dropper fly, while at the same time catching plenty of fish on the surface. In fact, it fooled the largest fish I have ever seen in the creek I tested it on. Unfortunately I lost that battle, but after refusals the previous few days on other flies, I now have a confidence pattern for these smaller golden stones. And of course, you could upsize this to represent larger Golden Stoneflies. Or you could get rid of the egg sac (or just change the color of it), and get rid of the tails and I am sure it would work as a smaller hopper as well. So a versatile pattern as well.
