Karnataka has taken a major step towards sustainable waste management with the launch of the state's first high-tech Fuel Pellet Plant at Kemral in Dakshina Kannada district. The innovative Waste to Wealth project converts dry waste into fuel pellets that can be used by cement factories and other industries as an alternative fuel. Established under the Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen) at a cost of around ₹48 lakh, the plant is expected to save lakhs of rupees in transportation costs by eliminating the need to send dry waste to Belagavi for disposal. The initiative not only addresses the growing waste disposal crisis but also generates revenue for local bodies and creates livelihood opportunities for women through Self-Help Groups under the National Rural Livelihood Mission. With industries now required to use alternative fuels, demand for these pellets is increasing rapidly, making this project a model for sustainable development across Karnataka.
