THE CRYSTAL DAGGER | Spectacular Bronze Age Burial in S.W. Spain

Archaeologists unearthed an extraordinary collection of arrowheads and a beautifully preserved dagger in excavations at the site of Tholos de Montelirio between 2007-10 - all made from exquisitely flaked rock crystal. The remains of at least 25 individuals were also excavated. 20 were found in the larger main chamber, two in the smaller chamber and a further three in the passage. Analysis has revealed that at least 15 of the individuals were women and it seems likely that they may all have been females. They also found a large amount of what are thought to be shrouds or items of clothing with the bodies. They had been made with tens of thousands of perforated and amber beads. In a further twist, it was found that 7 of the individuals had been suffering from mercury poisoning. A scenario ripe for speculation ... let the games begin!
