Between late 2019 and early 2020, Betelgeuse lost more than two-thirds of its brightness in a matter of weeks. It was noticeable to the naked eye. Anyone looking toward the constellation Orion could see that something strange was happening to the star on their shoulder. For the first time in over four hundred years, many people seriously wondered if they were about to witness a star explode. In this documentary, you'll understand everything that's happening with Betelgeuse, the most famous red supergiant in the sky. You'll discover what caused the Great Dimming of 2019. It wasn't the beginning of the end. It was a surface mass ejection: a colossal bubble of hot gas that erupted from the star's surface, cooled, and condensed into a cloud of cosmic dust that covered a quarter of its face. The star sneezed a curtain of soot in front of its own light. You'll travel inside a dying star. Betelgeuse has already exhausted its hydrogen and is moving toward increasingly heavier elements, fusing helium into carbon as its core structures itself in layers like an onion. Each stage is accelerating dramatically: millions of years for hydrogen, a single day for silicon. And when it produces its first gram of iron, the final countdown will have begun, because fusing iron consumes energy instead of releasing it. You're about to learn about the discovery that changed everything. In July 2025, a team from the NASA Ames Research Center detected Betelgeuse's companion star, Siwarha ("its bracelet" in Arabic), for the first time. A young star of approximately 1.6 solar masses orbits inside the supergiant's atmosphere, just 4 astronomical units away—closer than Jupiter is to the Sun. Its trail of gas causes the six-year brightness variations that had puzzled the world for a century. The mystery of the second heartbeat had a name. Detection: 'Alopeke' speckle camera on the GEMINI NORTH telescope (8.1 meters). Publication: Howell et al. 2025, ApJL 988 L47. In January 2026, Andrea Dupree's team (CfA HARVARD) confirmed the speckle with HUBBLE. When will it explode? Sometime within the next 100,000 YEARS. For a star, tomorrow. For you, extremely unlikely to see. But when it happens, it will be the brightest spectacle in centuries. Detectors would first pick up a burst of NEUTRINOS, hours before the visible flash. Then, within a week, BETELGEUSE would increase its brightness by a hundred thousand times. It would shine as brightly as the MOON concentrated into a single point. It would be visible in broad daylight for weeks. At night it would cast shadows. You could read a book by its light. It would remain brighter than Venus for almost a year. Is it dangerous? No. To harm Earth, a supernova would have to occur within 50-160 light-years. Betelgeuse is 650 light-years away. We're close enough to enjoy the show and far enough away that it won't touch us at all. And there's a disturbing detail: light from Betelgeuse takes 650 years to reach us.
