Almaty is facing a major transport reform. BRT implementation plans will be amended, and several city streets may become one-way. This was announced at a briefing by Yerzhan Dikhanbayev, Head of the City Mobility Department. He also announced plans to launch LRT and develop paid parking. The line is expected to be 18 kilometers long. City authorities have decided to suspend construction of the rapid transit lane on Raimbek Avenue. Furthermore, changes may also affect the existing section along Timiryazev Street. It is currently not cost-effective to introduce BRT traffic along the central part of the roadway. BRT on Timiryazev is currently being reviewed, and I believe it may be converted to one-way traffic. Authorities believe the initiative will increase capacity by at least 20 percent. City authorities do not intend to eliminate paid parking in residential areas. However, parking will become free for residents of nearby buildings.
