POV Beekeeping | Building a Split Frame by Frame During Swarm Season
#joneyjefe #hivesplit #beekeeping POV beekeeping at the Cow Pasture Apiary. This is the continuation of me troubleshooting a hive during swarm season and deciding to make a split in real time. At this point, I’m becoming more confident the queen is in the bottom box, so now the goal shifts toward building a solid split with: • brood • larvae • nurse bees • nectar • pollen • and eventually a new queen You can hear me walking through the process frame by frame: “Okay… there’s brood.” “Here’s larvae.” “Let’s make sure the queen isn’t on this frame.” That’s the kind of thing newer beekeepers don’t always realize: making splits is mostly about observation and careful frame selection. I also point out: • uncapped brood and larvae • drone brood • nectar frames • cleaning up excess hive trash • making sure there’s open space for a queen to lay • and checking for possible varroa signs on larvae One thing I like about this footage is that it’s not staged. It’s actual field decision-making while working bees. Sometimes you start an inspection thinking: “I’m just checking this colony.” Then 20 minutes later you’re: • diagnosing swarm activity • checking queen location • reorganizing boxes • and building a split on the fly. That’s real beekeeping. I also intentionally leave in some of the slower moments because that’s honestly how inspections work. You stop, think, reassess, and let the bees tell you what’s actually happening. A top-level beekeeper doesn’t force a plan onto the hive. They adapt to what the colony is showing them. That’s the real lesson in this series. Honey with a J. Jeff with one F between two E’s.
