But the privileged few who have worked on a hit sitcom know that the paychecks don’t end when the show does. When a series is successful, it gets released on DVD. It also gets redistributed and syndicated. And with the popularity of services like Netflix, streaming sites are bidding on television shows like crazy. But whatever the outcome is, the actors who starred on these shows can rest assured that they’ll get residual checks known in the industry as royalties. But here’s the thing. According to the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, this perk doesn’t apply to every performer. Residuals are financial compensations paid to an actor for the work they’ve done. But they only kick in once the show starts airing reruns on television or start streaming on sites. Main stars who contributed to the success of the show will continue to receive royalties, which will prove to be quite lucrative in the long-run. But sadly, background actors won’t be getting a lot of dough in their residual checks. That’s assuming they even get a check at all. But those that do agree to their initial compensation have to sign a contract after the agreed upon payment is calculated. The formulas used to calculate how much an actor makes involves variables like the actor’s contract, the time spent on production, the production type, and the market where the show will air.
