Herring Fishing - HOW TO SETUP A SIMPLE SABIKI RIG - Simple Fast Fish Rigs. Herring fishing like any fishing can be as simple or as complex as you make it. The herring fishing I like to keep simple. But no matter how you cut the herring fishing you need a sabiki rig for herring. A five drop sabiki rig is fine with me but if you are looking for maximum yield you may want to double or even triple the drops as many people do. Remember if you lose a triple herring rig you lose 3 rigs and another 10 bucks in flashers and lights. I will often use a flasher which is optional. Many folks will use 2, 3 or even 4 with multiple rigs along with flashing lights. For long casting you may want to leave the flasher off and work with a single rig. I have no preference to the brand of rig but often pay attention to the hook size. Large hooks are better for holding those herring on the way up. Smaller may be better for hooking up with more herring. A US size #6 or #4 is my preference but #8 is quite ideal. Most the time I just use what I have laying around.
