She wrote of love and longing with an intimacy no poet before her had attempted. Of her nine books of poetry, almost all is lost — we have only fragments. Fragment 31, one of the few to survive nearly whole, describes the physical symptoms of desire — racing heart, failing voice, fire beneath the skin — with a precision that still feels startlingly modern twenty-six centuries later.
