SMART on FHIR - Apps for Healthcare
SMART on FHIR is a new approach that will enable "plug-in apps" to run natively inside any compliant EHR. This presentation will explore the three key technologies behind the approach: FHIR - a new HL7 standard that creates a RESTful API for EHR data stores The SMART Platform, an open-source toolkit for embedding HTML5 "apps" into EHR workflow Clinical Element Models, an open repository of detailed semantic information describing the key "messages" necessary to communicate core patient data across an API. We will touch on all three technologies, and provide a demo of several "apps" that have been ported to SMART on FHIR. About the Speaker: David McCallie, SVP, Medical Informatics, leads the Cerner Medical Informatics team. His team engages in R&D focused on innovations at the intersection of computer science and clinical medicine. Recent research has targeted applications of semantic content extracted from the clinical record using natural language parsing and machine-learning techniques. In addition to his role at Cerner, he works with industry collaborators to create open, vendor-neutral approaches to core problems of interoperability. He was a co-founder of the CommonWell Health Alliance, a multi-vendor non-profit that supports federated EHR-to-EHR interoperability. Prior to that, he helped create Direct, a simplified approach to secure clinical messaging, which is now a component of Meaningful Use. Dr. McCallie is a member of ONC's HIT Standards Committee, where he serves on the Privacy and Security "Tiger Team" and other workgroups. He received a BSEE from Duke University, and his MD from Harvard Medical School. This talk was given at DevCon, Cerner's internal engineering conference.
