Margo Detlef Tewes, “Raffaele Calace: Ten Preludes,” AureaVox Records, available from www.edition49.de or www.trekel.de The Calace Preludes are the pinnacle of the Romantic repertoire for solo mandolin. 'There were no integral recordings until Getrud Weyhofen's landmark outing in the 1990s. Weyhofen had the field to herself until very recently when the French mandolinist Julien Martineau issued his integral recording in 2013 (reviewed very favorably by me in the CMSA Journal). Now, on the heels of the Martineau comes another integral recording by Detlef Tewes, the eminent German mandolinist. Tewes has long been one of the very best classical mandolinists in the universe with a technique bordering on the transcendental. His approach emphasizes the bravura, virtuosic elements in this music more than either Weyhofen or Martineau, and consequently his phrasing is holder, more forceful, and less consciously romantic (compared with Martineau). With the Weyhofen out of print and not easily obtained (except at a very high price on Ebay) the Tewes can serve admirably, as a reference recording for anyone studying this music. As one expects, the performance is meticulous and highly polished, with not even the tiniest of flaws that I could discern. The recording can be purchased I separately or together with Tewes' new edition of the Preludes I published by Edition49. Es gab keine vollständige Aufnahme bis Gertrud Weyhofens bahnbrechenden Einsatz in den 90er Jahren. Weyhofen stand allein in diesem Bereich bis neulich der französische Mandolinist Julien Martineau seine vollständige Aufnahme im Jahre 2013 veröffentlichte. (von mir sehr positiv bewertet im CMSA Journal) Jetzt kurz nach der Aufnahme Martineaus folgt noch eine Gesamtaufnahme des ausgezeichneten deutschen Mandolinisten Detlef Tewes. Tewes wird seit langem als einer der besten klassischen Mandolinisten des Universums angesehen mit einer ans Überirdische angrenzenden Technik. Seine Herangehensweise betont die bravourösen, virtuosen Elemente dieser Musik viel mehr als Weyhofen oder Martineau und dementsprechend ist seine Phrasierung kühner, kraftvoller und weniger bewusst romantisch (in Vergleich zu Martineau). Da die Aufnahme von Weyhofen vergriffen ist und nicht leicht zu beschaffen ist (ausgenommen für einen hohen Preis bei Ebay) dient die von Tewes als Referenzaufnahme für Studierende dieser Musik vortrefflich. Wie zu erwarten ist die Darbietung akribisch und hochpoliert und ich konnte nicht einmal den kleinsten Makel feststellen.
