Tantra is said to be a path to enlightenment, or at least that's how it was once understood in India. In this country, Tantra is promoted as a means of improved sexuality and more harmonious relationships. Global cultural exchange at the end of the 19th century brought a number of religious and philosophical ideas to Europe. This was also the case with Tantra. While it shocked the colonial rulers because it involved extremely unconventional practices, it thrilled the Theosophical Society all the more because they believed Tantra contained ancient wisdom. The Western fascination with the "spiritual East" was then taken up in the mid-20th century by the philosophy professor and later guru Osho. He linked tantric theories and rituals with psychotherapy, sparking a boom that continues to this day. While researchers today are unsure whether the sometimes sexually charged tantric texts should not be understood metaphorically, Tantra is commonly primarily associated with it. So what is Tantra? What role does sexuality play in it, and how does it all relate to the much-vaunted enlightenment? Yves Bossart and Olivia Röllin explore these questions in a meeting of "Sternstunde Philosophie" and "Sternstunde Religion."
