The large intestine, also known as the colon, includes the cecum, ascending colon, transverse colon, descending colon, sigmoid colon, rectum, and anal canal. The colon wall has four main layers: the mucosa, submucosa, a muscular layer, and the outer serosa. Blood vessels called the vasa recta supply blood to the colon. Although the cause is unknown, diverticulosis is associated with a low-fiber diet, constipation, and frequent straining during bowel movements. Constipation causes increased pressure within the colon. This increased pressure can cause the mucosa and submucosa to herniate into a weakened area of the colon wall, forming a diverticulum. Diverticulosis occurs when these diverticula are present, but it often has no other symptoms. In contrast, diverticulitis occurs when the diverticula become inflamed. Common symptoms of diverticulitis include lower left abdominal pain, fever, constipation or diarrhea, and decreased appetite. Diverticulitis can lead to a collection of pus called an abscess. Excessive swelling and pus buildup can lead to a perforation through which pus and other material will leak into the abdomen. This is a very serious condition and requires immediate medical attention. If you have a severe case of diverticulitis, you may need a procedure to drain an abscess. If the problem persists, you may need surgery to remove the affected part of the colon. During the procedure, the surgeon will bring the remaining end of the colon through the abdominal wall, creating an opening called a stoma. After the colon has healed, it can be reconnected to the rectum. The primary treatment for diverticulosis is increasing the intake of high-fiber foods to soften and bulk up stools, which helps stimulate the colon to contract and eliminate them. Other treatments for diverticulitis include a clear liquid diet and oral antibiotics. ANH12077es
