I probably spend most of my time in the garden weeding. But anyone who mulches, i.e., covers their beds, has far fewer problems with weeds: weeds are suppressed, moisture is retained much better in the soil (less watering is needed), and the soil organisms are significantly more active. But I have another reason for using mulch. Last gardening season, I had tomato leaf spot disease. It's a fungus, similar to late blight. To prevent the spores from multiplying again, I spread ground mustard in the greenhouse (see    • Genialer Trick für eure Tomaten: Senf gege...  ). I'll also cover the soil there with a thick layer of mulch. For this, I bought 9 cubic meters of wood chips (around €20 per cubic meter) and used them to cover the beds and paths in the greenhouse. Wood chips are normally used for heating – but the cost of wood chips hasn't increased, or only very slightly, compared to pellets, gas, or heating oil. Therefore, wood chips are quite affordable.
