Exploring Western Sicily | 8-Day Road Trip Around Western Sicily

The less-touristy side of Sicily, the Western region, was drastically different from the rest of Italy. For someone who has been to Italy 7 times and explored most of the country, Sicliy was a completely new experience. Very few people speak English, the landscape is dry and arid, the food is primarily seafood, but the experience is next to none. This region of Sicliy feels incredibly diverse, as if you've hopped over to Northern Africa but still found incredible pasta dishes. Depending on the time you have to explore Sicily, we highly recommend focusing on either the Western or Eastern side during your trip. There is so much to see, even allowing just 2 days for each town was difficult for us. Renting a car was the best way to explore the island though I will say driving through towns, especially Palermo, can be a nightmare and terrifying at times. Glad we did it but next time I would avoid driving through Palermo. Cefalu was by far our favorite destination. This town is incredibly gorgeous, has so many wonderful shops and restaurants, and has that feel of southern Italy, similar to the Amalfi Coast. I think our itinerary was perfect for exploring Western Sicily; I wouldn't change much if I had to do it again. I just wish we had more time to explore more of this beautiful region of Italy.
