June 17, 2026 – Word of the Day, Gospel & Pope’s Reflection Today the Church celebrates the memorial of several saints, including St. Albert Chmielowski, St. Emily de Vialar, and St. Ranieri of Pisa. Today’s Word of the Day calls us to examine the source of our spiritual life. We explore the transfer of divine authority and the core of authentic devotion. The readings contrast the public, visible passing of a prophetic mantle with Jesus' call to practice our faith in secret, reminding us that true righteousness is seen not by others, but by our Father in heaven. 🙏 Readings: First Reading: 2 Kings 2:1, 6–14 — As the LORD is about to take the prophet Elijah up to heaven in a whirlwind, his devoted disciple Elisha refuses to leave his side. After they cross the Jordan River on dry ground, Elijah asks what he can do for Elisha. Elisha requests a "double portion" of Elijah's spirit. As Elijah ascends in a flaming chariot, his mantle falls to the ground. Elisha picks it up, strikes the water as Elijah had done, and the water parts, showing that the spirit of Elijah now rests on him. Gospel: Matthew 6:1–6, 16–18 — Jesus instructs His disciples to "take care not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them." He warns against performing acts of piety—such as giving alms, praying, and fasting—for public praise. Instead, these acts should be done in secret, for the Father who sees in secret. The reward for this sincere, hidden devotion comes not from human applause but from God Himself. 🙏 Reflection: Today’s readings present a powerful meditation on the nature of true spiritual authority and devotion. In the First Reading, we witness a visible and dramatic transfer of power. Elisha’s inheritance of Elijah’s spirit is confirmed by a public miracle. This story is about apostolic succession—the faithful continuation of God’s work from one generation to the next. Elisha’s desire for a "double portion" is not one of greed, but a heartfelt plea to be equipped for the immense task of being God's prophet. The Gospel, however, turns our attention inward. Jesus redirects our focus from the external and dramatic to the internal and sincere. He teaches that the authenticity of our faith is not measured by public displays but by the secret, humble relationship we cultivate with the Father. Prayer, fasting, and charity lose their divine value when they become performances for a human audience. The true reward, the one that truly matters, is the one given by the Father "who sees in secret." Together, these passages teach a balanced lesson: we are called to carry the mantle of faith in the world (like Elisha), but our spiritual practices must be rooted in a secret, sincere love for God (as Jesus teaches). The ultimate goal is not to be seen as righteous, but to be righteous before God. 🙏 Application for Today: Reflect: In what areas of your spiritual life are you more concerned with how others perceive you than with your actual relationship with God? Pray: Ask the Father for the grace to purify your intentions, so that your acts of charity, prayer, and self-denial may be done for His eyes only. Act: Choose one small, hidden act of kindness or sacrifice to perform today. Tell no one about it, offering it to God alone and trusting in His unseen reward. 🙏 Prayer: Father in Heaven, Who sees in secret, thank You for the gift of faith. Purify my heart of all desire for human praise and recognition. Grant me the sincere spirit of Elisha, to desire only to serve You, and the quiet humility Jesus teaches. May my life be a hidden offering of love to You, so that my true reward may be found in Your eternal presence. Amen.
