If You Have Red Hair — DNA Finally Revealed Where It Really Comes From
What does red hair really reveal about your DNA? For generations, red hair has been connected to Celts, Vikings, ancient northern Europeans and even Neanderthals. Popular claims suggest that every red-haired person inherited the trait from one ancient population or a single original ancestor. But modern genetics makes that simple origin story difficult to support. Red hair is strongly influenced by variants in the MC1R gene, which regulates whether pigment-producing cells create more dark eumelanin or red-yellow pheomelanin. Reduced MC1R activity can shift this balance toward pheomelanin, producing red, auburn or strawberry-blond hair, often alongside freckles and greater sensitivity to ultraviolet light. However, there is no single universal “red-hair mutation.” Several MC1R variants are strongly associated with the trait, and different combinations can produce different results. A large UK Biobank study found that MC1R explained most—but not all—of red hair’s inherited variation, while additional genes helped account for the remaining complexity. Ancient DNA also suggests that some Neanderthals may have had lighter pigmentation or reddish hair. But their identified MC1R variant is absent from thousands of tested modern humans, indicating that red pigmentation evolved independently in Neanderthals and modern humans rather than being directly inherited from them.
