Why Do Some Brand New Fountain Pens Write So Badly?

Sometimes a new pen skips, hard starts, feels scratchy, writes too dry, writes too wet, or just doesn’t feel as smooth as you expected. In this video, I’m talking about why some fountain pens write poorly when they’re brand new. We’ll look at common issues like misaligned tines, tight tine gaps, baby’s bottom, poor ink flow, quality control, and the difference between a pen that needs a simple adjustment and one that may need to be returned. Most fountain pens write just fine out of the box, but when they don’t, it can be frustrating — especially if the pen was expensive. My goal is to explain what might be going on, what problems are normal, what problems are not, and what you should look for before deciding whether to tune the nib, exchange the pen, or send it to a nib specialist.
