UK and Netherlands Order 8 Amphibious Ships — But Why Now?

UK Netherlands amphibious ships reshape NATO. The United Kingdom and the Netherlands are moving ahead with a £2.4 billion plan to acquire eight new amphibious transport ships — four for each navy. These Dutch-designed vessels are expected to become the backbone of a renewed UK–Netherlands amphibious force, designed for coastal operations, rapid reinforcement, drones, autonomous systems, and NATO mobility in Northern Europe. In this video, we examine why this program matters beyond simple ship replacement. The new amphibious ships could help NATO operate across the Baltic Sea, the High North, the North Atlantic, Arctic approaches, ports, islands, fjords, and critical undersea infrastructure. We also look at the Damen Enforcer 16828 concept as the closest public technical reference: around 168 meters in length, 28 meters in beam, about 15,500 tons displacement, diesel-electric propulsion, 18 knots speed, and roughly 8,000 nautical miles of range. But there is a key limitation: these ships will not be aircraft carriers or air-defense destroyers. They will still need escorts, frigates, mine countermeasure support, air defense, secure communications, and protection against submarines, missiles, drones, and unmanned surface vessels.
