In the opening of Rosso Malpelo, we learn that the protagonist's nickname is due to his red hair, which is why he is the victim of a popular prejudice: redheads are evil. For this reason, Rosso Malpelo is mistreated by everyone, both at home, where his mother and sister can't stand him, and at work, where the workers kick and mock him. The only one who treats him like a human being is his father, Master Misciu, nicknamed Beast, for his tireless dedication to work. Malpelo, along with his father, works in a red sand quarry in late 19th-century Sicily. Unfortunately, one day his father dies while demolishing a pillar, buried alive by the red sand. Malpelo witnesses the accident and desperately tries to save his father by digging with his bare hands. The accident makes Malpelo more sullen and grumpy than before. Malpelo vents his wickedness by mercilessly beating his gray donkey and harbors a vengeful grudge against his master and Uncle Mommu, whom he holds responsible for his father's death. Malpelo continues to work frantically in the tunnel where the accident occurred, convinced that sooner or later his father's body will be found. But when one of Master Misciu's shoes is found, Malpelo is afraid of stumbling upon his father's body and goes to work in another tunnel. Shortly afterward, his father's body is found, and Uncle Mommu notes that the man had died a horrible death: buried alive in the sand, he desperately tried to save himself by digging, until he suffocated. Malpelo is not informed of his father's brutal death, and he inherits his father's belongings: his new corduroy trousers and shirt, which are shrunk; his shoes, which are too big for him and are therefore hung on a nail; his hoe and pickaxe. One day, a boy with a dislocated femur, a former laborer, arrives at the quarry and is nicknamed Frog because of his way of walking. Malpelo and Frog have an ambiguous relationship. Malpelo mistreats Ranocchio, hitting and scolding him, but at the same time, he helps him with the hardest tasks and takes care of him. Ranocchio and Malpelo talk about various things, and during these conversations, Malpelo's pessimistic view of the world emerges. Red Malpelo believes that to gain respect, you have to hit others and be the strongest. For example, he explains to Ranocchio that the gray donkey must be beaten savagely because, if the donkey had hands, it would be the one hitting them. One day, the gray donkey dies, and the carter throws him into the bottom of a ravine. Red Malpelo and Ranocchio often go to watch the donkey's carcass being picked clean by dogs. Malpelo claims that the donkey is finally no longer suffering and that it would have been better if he had never been born. Ranocchio later falls ill with tuberculosis, and Malpelo takes care of him. Unfortunately, Ranocchio can no longer work in the quarry and stops coming. So Malpelo visits him one Saturday and thinks that Ranocchio's mother is desperate because she has given birth to a weak and sickly son, unlike him. When Ranocchio dies, Malpelo is alone in the world. His mother has remarried and gone to live in another city; his sister has also gotten married and left home, which is closed down. Malpelo thus doesn't even have a home to return to. One day, a fugitive comes to the quarry wanting to hide, but after a few weeks, he considers prison a paradise compared to the quarry and quits his job. With no one to look after him, Malpelo is often assigned the most dangerous jobs. One day, Malpelo is sent to explore an underground tunnel that could provide an excellent connection to a quarry shaft, but if it doesn't, there's a risk of getting lost forever. It's therefore an extremely dangerous job that no one wants to do. Malpelo accepts and descends into the tunnel, from where he will never return. Since the day he disappeared, the kids have whispered his name, fearing he'd suddenly reappear, with his red hair and gray eyes.
