The Pilot Watch - a 600€ German Flieger vs a 55€ Chinese Flieger

In this video I compare a 600€ German Flieger against a 55€ Chinese Flieger. I also go through the history of the Pilot watch and a bit of the Flieger watch. I absolutely love Pilot watches, they are my favourites. Modern pilot's watches are usually built to reference aesthetic traits of past said purposeful watches. Those traits can be slide rule bezels or GMT complications, but some of the original designs were simple and have their origin in the military. A pilot watch is a specific type of timepiece that was initially designed with airline pilots in mind. Back in 1911, the very first pilot watch, the Santos, was marketed to pilots as a functional watch for flights. Pilots and navigators wore aviation watches not just as timepieces but also to complement and verify onboard instruments in the determination of flight time and position. Pilot watches are all different. I mean, If you’re a fighter pilot, you need to be able to read it in between strafing runs. A globe-trotting commercial pilot might want a GMT hand showing a second time zone; a solo explorer flying an ultralight might want a GPS function in the watch. Made for the German Luftwaffe, the Flieger watch (the word means “pilot” in German), were intended only as flight tools. The paramount focus of the Flieger was legibility; robustness and accuracy were factors as well, but if the navigator or pilot couldn’t quickly tell the time, the watch was of no use. It was made in two types, A and B. The Type A being very simple, with more of a traditional clock layout, and the Type B being more technical.
