Sanctuary of Our Lady of Częstochowa at Jasna Góra, November 15, 2025 Chapel of the Miraculous Image of Our Lady. The Akathist is the oldest Marian hymn, dating back to the 5th century. Its authorship is attributed to St. Romanus the Cantor. Legend has it that during his sleep, Mary appeared to him and gave him a scroll with the text and notes of the hymn to eat. In the morning, the saint sang its contents. The hymn was first performed on August 7, 626 CE, when, thanks to the protection of the Mother of God, Constantinople was saved from an attack by the pagan Avars. At that time, a violent hurricane scattered the enemy fleet, driving the ships ashore near the sanctuary of Deipara – Our Lady of Blachernae, in the Constantinople district. The city's population sang the Akathist standing all night, thanking Mary for their deliverance. A dedication was then added to the hymn: "O Valiant Hetman, a song of victorious gratitude, freed from captivity, your servants, we bring to you." This oldest hymn is said to be one of the most magnificent proofs of the love bestowed upon the Mother of God. Today, it can be heard in various churches around the world. It is especially sung during Lent, on the Feast of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception.
