Lucerne in Switzerland is a medieval city full of charm and beauty. I have put together my thoughts and impressions from the journey, including the stunning scenery and my very first experience staying in a 20-bed room at a youth hostel. Please sit back and enjoy. Even though it was a 20-bed room, it was more than satisfactory just for getting some sleep. Mind you, with other people already resting, it was quite difficult to turn on the lights... but even that kind of "classic youth hostel dilemma" becomes part of the flavor of the journey. The first Swiss gentleman I spoke with was incredibly kind and showed me around the facilities. In a wonderfully human and amusing twist, when he went to use the shower room on another floor, he forgot to take his room key. He ended up calling out for help quite loudly outside the room, so this time it was my turn to open the door for him. The communal space in the hostel was amazingly comfortable, and conversations with people from various countries flowed quite naturally. I deliberately took up a spot at a large table, reasoning to myself that those who sat far away were "people who didn't want to be spoken to," whereas anyone who chose to sit near me must be "someone who wanted to chat." With that settled in my mind, I went ahead and struck up conversations. When I am traveling, I find myself being a bit bolder than usual. Mind you, my English is not exactly my strong suit. That is why my opening line was always, “I'm not good at English, Is that okay?” When a German fellow asked me, "Have you ever been to Germany?", and I replied, "Sorry, I've never been," a slightly awkward atmosphere filled the air for a moment. If it had been in Japanese, I could have followed it up smoothly to ease the mood, but with translated English, it is frustrating how your true feelings cannot quite keep up. It really made me wish that I could have a proper conversation while looking at the person’s facial expressions, rather than relying on translation. The kind Swiss gentleman left the hostel around 5 o'clock in the morning. I wondered if he might come back, but we didn't cross paths again, and I felt rather sorry that I couldn't say a proper thank you to him. Encounters while traveling are always once-in-a-lifetime experiences (Ichigo Ichie). I want to truly cherish these unique moments that may only happen once in a lifetime. 【My First Solo Journey Abroad in My 50s】 For my destination, I chose Switzerland and Italy, places I have long dreamed of visiting. I would be absolutely delighted if you could feel as though you are "traveling together with me" through Switzerland.
