Maria Valtorta – Notebooks - December 30, 1945: Beware of the falsely humble, the false myths; they are the cunning exalters, the liars who believe in the supernatural that manifests itself. Before the dictation that follows on the next page, while I'm correcting my typed manuscript, Satan's demonic face appears to me. Just his face. He laughs, extremely sarcastic, with all his expression. Then he ends in a loud, evil laugh and disappears. I go back to correcting and don't think about it anymore. Afterwards, however, I never saw Satan's bronze face or heard his venomous laughter, as if he were gone forever. Jesus' last words make me think he was not far away. " We read in the book of Joshua of the stratagem used by the Gibeonites and of Joshua's verdict: "There will never be lacking among your descendants those who cut wood and carry water to the house of my God." In the passage of God, who travels his path through the centuries to reach the promised place at the appointed time—and the passage of every "that" that is paradisiacally supernatural is the passage of God, that is, the faith that proceeds and extends throughout the world, that is, the rise of the righteous, or the inspired, or instruments of God, all things that serve to lead humanity through a painful and long exodus to the eternal Kingdom—do we not often see creatures approaching the people of the saints with an impure purpose? Some out of fear, some out of curiosity, some (a greater sin) out of derision. They approach, observe, decide whether or not it is worthwhile to remain. Present or future interests always motivate them. The interest of gaining from the friendship of an instrument of God or a minister of God. The interest of not damning one's soul by deriding the supernatural. The interest, finally, of serving the opposing side by going as spies among the holy army to steal secrets and report them to God's enemies, who use them to harm God's servants and works. These latter, and those they serve, are entirely demonic in their actions; they are proliferations of the Judas plant. God condemns them. But He also considers others very vile, and He takes due account of their subtle respect for the supernatural or for God's minister. They will not receive total condemnation, but neither will they receive merit for this calculated respect. But especially those of the Judas type approach seemingly humble and harmless, "having put food on their donkeys in old sacks and torn and mended wineskins," dressed in "worn clothes and shabby, patched shoes," carrying "hard, crumbled loaves of bread for the viaticum," as the Bible perfectly describes them in the book of Joshua. They are the falsely humble, the falsely meek, the cunning extollers, the lying believers in the supernatural that manifests itself. Their words are cunning and a dagger. And if only they were a naked dagger! But it is wrapped in precious cloth. They say: "I come because I have heard, I want to be instructed by you, God's instrument, because I am a sinner, an ignorant, an unfortunate, and you are a light, you are a strength, you are a saint..." They say: "We come from afar to make peace with you... Having heard the fame of your power, which is that of God, ... we come to say to you: make an alliance with me." Beware, O servants of God! Do not believe everything you are told. Beware! To protect the King's secret and to safeguard your soul. You are, by your very absolute faith, defenseless against the wiles of the serpents. Be careful not to open the "closed city." Be careful not to be poisoned by the poison that would paralyze you forever. The poison of self-satisfaction. Often "the common people," that is, ordinary but honest souls, are more alert than you in perceiving the moves of false allies and foreseeing the dangers that may arise from them. For the "common people" are halfway between you, all spirit, and the enemies of the spirit, and therefore have access to shadows and lights, cunning and wisdom... Beware, my children! Satan never sleeps, his thoughts never cease, his work knows no peace. He moves his armies, which are not only those of hell. He hurls them against you—fortresses, coffers, books of God—to dismantle you, to rape you and steal your treasures, to—above all—to write with the red of his hell, with the red-black of his accursed pools, impure words on the pages of God, to engrave upon your spirit his traits of pride. Woe, woe, woe to the servant, the instrument, the voice that speaks the word of Satan: "I am"! Woe even if he speaks it with the mere movement of his thought!
