We examine the war and diplomatic strategies of the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent, the true balance of power behind Lepanto, and how the 1555 Treaty of Amasya shaped the present-day Turkey-Iran border. We spoke with Assoc. Prof. Dr. Zahit Atçıl from Boğaziçi University about why the 16th-century Ottoman Empire abandoned its policy of continuous conquest and focused on protecting its borders, and how it laid the foundations of the early modern bureaucratic state, with historical justifications. We discussed how wars were used not only to gain territory but also as a strategic tool to force the other side to make peace at the diplomatic table.
