In 2013, I had the opportunity to spend three months as a guest at Himmerod Abbey (Eifel region). The reason for my stay was a book project about monastic life at the abbey. The community at that time consisted of eleven monks. At a community meeting, which I was privileged to attend, the brothers unanimously decided to support the book project. In the following months, I had the opportunity to speak with the monks individually about their monastic lives. My central question was: "How does a person become a monk?" To explore the depths of monastic life, the conversations were very personal. I recorded the individual conversations with a video camera to facilitate the later transcription of the texts. The book, THE COMMUNITY, was published by Wiesenburg Verlag. The complete interviews with all the monks can also be read there. Years later, in 2021, I had the idea of ​​making a film using the video footage. The result is now available in the documentary film: "The Last Monks of Himmerod Abbey." My special thanks go to the former Himmerod monks. The abbey was dissolved in 2017. The poet, Brother Stephan, is the only monk who was allowed to remain in the monastery. He is the last monk of Himmerod. The book "The Convent," featuring interviews with the Himmerod monks, is available in bookstores.
