How Fandom Impacts A Story
Anyone can pick up a pen and paper and add to a story. Nothing is physically stopping you from writing your perfect sequel to that movie you love. But canon prevents it from being real, from mattering. A barrier between all that is official and unofficial. At least, that’s the way it is for most works of fiction. But as modern creators push the boundaries of storytelling, the rules of canonicity become hazy. Fandom begins to influence media as much as it influences them. In today’s video, we’ll explore this concept of ‘canon’, the history of fandom, and a few works of fiction that break the mold. Archie Sonic was longer, but honestly, this is a contender for the biggest video yet. Longest production time (we’ve been working on it for like a month now), second longest runtime, and definitely some of the most fun I’ve had. You could say it’s been in the works for years - I originally did a presentation to a group with more or less the same outline in 2022. Two years later, and I found the file in the backups from my old hard drive. I was impressed in how similar it felt to my current style of video, and so I dusted it off, rewrote it, and a month later, here we are. I hope you enjoy it! And, even though I say it in the video, I would like to extend an invitation to any member of the Homestuck Team, old or new, to do an interview as a follow-up. It was difficult to find material on the drama behind Homestuck^2, three years later, with a lot of it being my personal observations at the time. It would be cool to hear the other side of the story, and perhaps hear some juicy behind-the-scenes process on the comic itself. On the other hand, I love the direction the new team is taking the comic, and would be head over heels for a chance to discuss it. Either way, my inbox is always open! ([email protected], btw.)
