The Blackhawks Could Draft a 6’4” MONSTER at No. 4 In The 2026 NHL Draft!

The 2026 NHL Draft: Chicago Blackhawks Edition series continues with one of the most physically impressive players in the class: Keaton Verhoeff. The Chicago Blackhawks pick 4th overall in the 2026 NHL Draft, and Verhoeff could be one of the biggest names available when Kyle Davidson is on the clock. He is a right-shot defenseman for the University of North Dakota, listed at 6-foot-4 and 212 pounds, and he does not even turn 18 until just before the draft. That combination is why so many draft boards have him near the very top. Verhoeff’s path has been unusual, and that is part of what makes him so interesting. As a 16-year-old in the WHL with Victoria, he scored 21 goals from the blue line and finished with 45 points in 63 games. That kind of production from a defenseman at that age is rare. Then, after NCAA eligibility rules changed, Verhoeff made the jump to college hockey and became the youngest player ever to suit up for North Dakota. He played major minutes against older competition and finished as the most productive freshman defenseman in college hockey with 6 goals and 14 assists for 20 points in 36 games. He also represented Canada at the World Juniors as a 17-year-old, which is not something Hockey Canada does lightly. By the end of the tournament, Verhoeff had shown why scouts view him as one of the most projectable defensemen in the draft. The appeal is obvious. Verhoeff is big, smart, right-handed, physical, and capable of moving pucks. He can quarterback a power play, handle tough minutes, and bring the kind of frame NHL teams covet. Defensemen with his size and handedness are always valuable, and if the offensive tools continue to develop, the ceiling becomes very interesting. The main question is skating. Scouts have pointed to his backward mobility, pivots, and overall four-way movement as areas that still need work. That matters, especially for a defenseman projected near the top of the draft. The optimistic view is that skating can improve with development. The cautious view is that it could determine whether he becomes a true No. 1 defenseman or more of a strong top-four player. For the Blackhawks, this creates a fascinating debate. Verhoeff and Chase Reid offer two very different defensive profiles. Reid is the higher-skill, higher-risk puck mover. Verhoeff is bigger, steadier, more projectable, and already has the NHL frame teams love. Chicago has good pieces on the blue line, including Artyom Levshunov and Sam Rinzel, but you can never have too many quality defensemen. A 6-foot-4 right-shot defenseman who can play big minutes is the type of player teams usually have to overpay for in free agency or trade talks.
