It is said that his championship win hastened the TT's governing body, ITTF, to change the rules so that each player's bat had to have different colours on backhand vs forehand. These days John uses long pips, the green one in this video, on his backhand. Watch for his constant yet fast twiddling which still unsettles opponents. His opponent, Dave Harvey, is a former high ranking English player who also played in the French professional league.
