Bombardier Dash Q400 Tailstrike Awareness & Prevention
The Bombardier Dash 8 Q400 is an evolution of an earlier design, that has resulted in a significantly longer fuselage when compared to the original. This increase in length results in an increased risk of tailstrike, especially during the landing phase. Bombardier and operators of the Q400 have a well developed set of standard operating procedures (SOP's) that address this risk, these procedures are highlighted in this video. If you are watching this video because you also operate the Q400, remember the "Pitch 5" is critical. Upon hearing the callout, take corrective action by either holding or reducing the pitch angle. Pilot Monitoring must take corrective action if the pitch attitude reaches 6 degrees. With 28 ft of the wing blown by the prop wash, rate of decent can be very accurately controlled using small adjustments to power and with negligible effect on the aircraft speed. I must stress however, your own company Operating Manuals, and the Bombardier Q400 AOM approved by your organisation, will contain the procedures you are obligated to follow. Your own training department will provide you with guidance and procedures specific to your operation. A note on quality: Apologies the video quality is very poor. It was only possible to replicate the video from a version that runs through a flash player, so the source material was of poor quality. This was the best I could achieve. I hope you find the material of some use. Happy landings.
