The Wedge Goes Off! 8–12ft South Swell Hits Newport Beach | Jamie O’Brien + Max Beach
The first real south swell of the year arrived early and lit up The Wedge in Newport Beach, California on March 12, 2026. What made this swell so unique is how early it showed up. Technically it's still winter in Southern California, and swells of this magnitude from the south usually don't arrive until much later in the season. The buoys were reading approximately 4.1ft at 18 seconds from 190°, delivering serious energy straight into Newport Beach’s famous wedge-shaped shoreline. Conditions lined up with light NNW offshore winds around 7 knots, helping keep the faces clean early before the chaos began. Because it was the first south swell of the season, a ton of sand had built up over the winter. That created some extremely wonky backwash, warped ribs, and chandeliers, making many of the waves nearly impossible to make. Add in a dropping tide through the morning, which often amplifies the size and intensity at The Wedge, and the result was absolute mayhem. Despite the sketchy conditions, there were still some incredible rides and heavy wipeouts throughout the session. One of the standouts was Jamie O’Brien (Red Bull, North Shore Oahu) surfing with the Fun Day Surf crew, including Sage Burke and MaddixAlotis, sending it on soft tops in heavy Wedge conditions. Local charger Max Beach also had several standout rides during the swell. This episode also includes unique drone angles from behind the jetty, giving a perspective of The Wedge that most people never get to see.
