This lesson analyzes verses 1 through 3 of Chapter 1, Canto 1 of the Srimad Bhagavatam. The Srimad Bhagavatam, a classic literary and philosophical epic, holds a prominent position among the voluminous wisdom writings of India. The Bhagavatam is the post-Vedic text of spiritual understanding. It has inspired countless works of literature, song, drama, painting, and sculpture. Known as “the ripe fruit of the tree of Vedic literature,” the Srimad Bhagavatam is the most comprehensive and authoritative exposition of Vedic knowledge. Covering topics from the nature of being to the origin of the universe, it touches on all fields of knowledge. Vyasadeva compiled the Srimad Bhagavatam after Krishna's departure from this world 5,000 years ago. His 18,000 dissected verses focus on the science of God and devotion to Him, and also include biographies of great devotees who followed the path of Bhakti (devotion) and attained Krishna.
