Out Run is a racing video game developed and published by Sega for arcade machines in 1986. It is known for its innovative hardware and graphics, non-linear gameplay, a selectable soundtrack with music composed by Hiroshi Kawaguchi, and the deluxe arcade cabinet with a hydraulic motion simulator. The objective is to avoid traffic and reach one of five destinations before time runs out. The game was designed by Yu Suzuki, who traveled to Europe to find inspiration for the game's stages. Suzuki's original concept was to base the game on the 1981 American film, The Cannonball Run. He disliked racing games where cars exploded upon impact (like Pole Position) and wanted players to enjoy the driving experience and feel "superior." You are the driver of a Ferrari and you must reach the finish line! The track has curves, crests, and dips, which increase the challenge by concealing obstacles such as traffic that the player must avoid. The goal of the game is to reach the finish line before time runs out. The game world is divided into multiple stages, each ending at a checkpoint, and reaching the end of a stage grants extra time. Near the end of each stage, the track forks, offering the player the option of choosing routes that lead to five different destinations. Each game concludes with its own ending scene, including the Ferrari breaking down or the presentation of a trophy.
