Speaking ahead of the Disney+ docu-series, Christine discusses the events she believes led to her daughter Caroline Flack’s death, and why she’s still determined to clear Caroline’s name and raise awareness about mental health in the media spotlight. The beloved Love Island host Caroline Flack tragically took her own life in February 2020, weeks before she was due to stand trial for allegedly assaulting her boyfriend, Lewis Burton. Despite Lewis saying he didn’t want to press charges — and later clarifying that the blood seen in a viral photo was Caroline’s, not his — the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) decided to pursue the case. Christine believes her daughter, who was battling mental health struggles, was “made an example of” because of her fame and intense public scrutiny. The CPS denies any wrongdoing, stating it followed legal procedure and acted in the public interest. The CPS denies that Caroline was treated differently because of her public profile, stating it chose to prosecute after reviewing the case and concluding there was “sufficient evidence” and that doing so was “in the public interest.” Now, four years on, Christine continues to seek justice and push for change — speaking out about mental health awareness, the pressures of fame, and the lasting impact of online and media harassment.
