Brazil has followed a path of technological regression and decreased sophistication in its productive fabric in recent years, resulting in significant stagnation in the overall productivity of the economy; a path contrary to that followed in the 1970s. The service sector as a whole has increased from 60% to 70% of GDP in the last 10 years. As shown in the important study by the University of Brasília (UnB), "Productivity in the Service Sector in Brazil," the sector now concentrates 74% of the country's workforce and was responsible for 83 out of every 100 new formal jobs created in recent years. In other words, along with the destruction of industrial jobs in the country, a wide range of job openings emerged in the service sector, especially in low-sophistication sectors, thanks to the real estate and consumer boom. The overall result of this movement, combined with full employment in the labor market, caused a huge increase in wages, without a corresponding improvement in productivity. The unit cost of production has increased significantly in the country, putting pressure on the profitability of industry, discouraging production and new investments.
