Ukraine has just unveiled its new underwater drone, designed to destroy the Kerch Bridge. This has caused absolute panic among Russians, who now know their infrastructure is increasingly vulnerable to a Ukrainian attack. Recently, a Ukrainian company unveiled its latest heavy underwater drone, the Sea Trident. It appears to be specifically designed to destroy strategic targets, such as the Kerch Bridge. The drone has a payload of 1,000 kilograms, capable of damaging the subwaterline support elements that hold up the structure. Russia's defenses are primarily designed to stop air and surface threats, while this drone attacks from below the sea surface, a domain in which Russia has less defensive capabilities. With a range of 3,200 kilometers, Ukraine can launch it from anywhere along its coast, and a maximum operating depth of sixty meters complicates detection. This makes the Sea Trident the underwater component for a combined attack on the Kerch Bridge. Standard Ukrainian drones would be used primarily to saturate Russian air defenses, while the missiles could strike the bridge from above in coordination with new underwater drones attacking the pillars from below. Additionally, drones with enhanced warheads or thermobaric charges, such as the Behemoth, could be deployed, which have already proven effective in neutralizing bridges in northern Crimea. However, to maximize the likelihood of structural damage to the much more imposing Kerch Bridge, Ukraine would combine these drones with long-range Neptune and Flamingo missiles equipped with much heavier warheads, up to a ton of explosives, capable of delivering a more impactful air strike. These launchers threaten the supporting infrastructure and the bridge spans from above, while naval drones suppress defenses and underwater drones strike the abutments. All operations can be protected by naval drones equipped with FPV launch and air defense capabilities, capable of attacking aircraft and patrol vessels, forming a chain of destruction of the Kerch Bridge, each layer designed to overwhelm a different element of the Russian defense. The recent Ukrainian attacks near the infrastructure are part of a systematic campaign aimed at weakening the Kerch Bridge's defenses. So far, Ukraine has avoided a premature direct attack on the bridge itself, focusing on striking the surrounding defense infrastructure in preparation for the final blow that Russia knows is imminent. In recent weeks, Ukraine has targeted precisely the systems Russia needs to detect drones, missiles, and maritime threats before they reach the bridge. Specifically, Ukrainian drones struck a radar system in Feodosia, responsible for tracking low-altitude targets, reducing Russia's warning time against Ukrainian drones. The most recent Ukrainian attack disabled four S-400 radars, weakening Russia's early warning capabilities against Ukrainian ballistic and cruise missiles. The two Pantsir systems destroyed around the bridge weaken its short-range protection, further exposing it. An electronic warfare system that interfered with Starlink was also destroyed in Kerch, disrupting Ukrainian operators' communications with their drones. These operations are opening corridors for drones, forcing Russian systems to reposition and making the bridge more difficult to defend during a combined attack. At the same time, Ukraine has paved the way for its maritime drones by striking two long-range anti-submarine warfare aircraft, designed to hunt underwater launchers such as the Sea Trident, on the ground. With this attack, Ukraine is blinding the systems that could stop the underwater incursion, increasing the chances of the Sea Trident reaching the Kerch Bridge. As a result of this series of attacks, the Russians are raising the alarm that a massive combined attack on the bridge is inevitable. Given the success of recent Ukrainian incursions, many Russians have almost already accepted the idea that the Kerch Bridge will eventually be hit, as evidenced by the anxiety of their military analysts. Combined with the repeated closures of the bridge due to nearby attacks, Russia is no longer guessing, but trying to prepare for a nightmare that is now only a matter of time.
