When you live or work in the city, this heat is particularly stifling. At On the Front Lines, we asked ourselves what could be done to stop suffocating. We compared different innovations: repainting roofs white, building green walls, installing misting systems, constructing large shade structures… Every city in France is competing with ideas to remain livable during the summer months. We observed the effectiveness of all these systems and discovered that the best defense against the heat is trees, and especially old trees! Yet, many city halls and property developers are now proposing to cut them down. They promise to plant others a little further away to compensate. This is absurd: with climate change, many young trees are struggling to grow. There's no guarantee they'll withstand the increasingly intense droughts and heat waves of the coming years. All the experts emphasize the importance of preserving our old trees in cities. In many urban areas, residents are fighting to save them. We followed them around: thanks to them, the most destructive projects are being abandoned.
