I've made videos in the past about the reading aesthetic and the desire to be a "well read" person, which often manifests online in the form of speed-reading, readathons and/or people bulk-buying books and forcing themselves to read hundreds of volumes every year. While I agree with a the majority of the criticism that booktok receives from people (including people on booktube and from the YouTube commentary and video essay community in general), I think there's more to it than just "all that smut is frying their brains". In this video I try to explore a couple of other factors that contribute to the rise of anti-intellectualism online - especially on booktok - including the concept of reading stamina and the growing niche of book influencers.
