Eksperymentalne osiedle domów atrialnych na Sadybie
On Orężna Street in Warsaw's Sadyba district, twelve single-story, white houses stand. From the outside, they appear inconspicuous – almost windowless and with flat roofs. Their secret lies within: each house is surrounded by a small private garden, called an atrium, onto which all the major rooms open. This design, known since Roman times, is almost unheard of in Poland. This single, small block between Orężna and Jedlińska Street is a pioneer in Poland. Architecture students learn about it from textbooks. It is also protected in the municipal register of historical monuments. Considering the advanced age of the creators and first residents of the Orężna Street colony, Józek Dutkiewicz from Sadyba decided to capture their memories. For four years – from 2022 to 2026 – he collected material for a documentary film. He reached out to the designers and residents of the estate, interviewed them, and above all, walked through their homes with his camera. The film includes their statements, archival photographs, plans, and recordings. The film features Donat Putkowski and Jolanta Putkowska, Jan Maciej Chmielewski, Izabela Chełkowska, Anna Cymer, Sławomir Gzell, and, in archival footage, Bratysław Wolczyński. Viewers will also see the interiors of three houses: those of Izabela Chełkowska and Bratysław Wolczyński, Donat Putkowski and Jolanta Putkowska, and Hanna Adamczewska-Wejchert and Kazimierz Wejchert. The film also offers a few tidbits worthy of a story of their own. How did they convince the director of the aerated concrete block factory in Siekierki to allocate scarce material to this particular project? Why did the investors of the atrium houses have to patiently wait for the residents of Jedlińska Street to begin construction? Who famously moved into the atrium complex during the final stage of its expansion? What caused tensions between the neighbors? The film provides the answers. The premiere of the film "Experimental Colony of Atrial Houses in Sadyba," directed by Józek Dutkiewicz, took place on May 21, 2026, at the Ferment House of Culture and Nature, located at 40 Iwonicka Street in Sadyba. The screening was so well-received that the organizers had to repeat the screening immediately after the premiere.
