There are many road signs that can confuse us as to their meaning, causing us to behave incorrectly on the road or give incorrect answers to the quizzes found on the driving theory test. In this video, I'll explain the differences between these three signs. Let's start with the first two signs: this one called RIGHT OF WAY in alternating one-way traffic, and this one called GIVE WAY in alternating one-way traffic. But what is an alternating one-way traffic? It's very simple to explain. An alternating one-way traffic occurs when a normally two-way road narrows at a certain point, and the space left no longer allows two vehicles traveling in opposite directions to pass at the same time, and they must pass one at a time. So, a vehicle traveling in one direction must pass first, and then the vehicle traveling in the other direction. Hence the name: alternating one-way traffic. But which vehicle will go first? The two signs we saw earlier will tell us this. The vehicle that encounters the RIGHT-OF-WAY sign in alternating one-way traffic will pass first, after obviously making sure that the vehicle in front stops to yield to it. If a traffic light is operating, we will no longer look at the vertical sign but will do what the light tells us. If a traffic policeman is also present, we will no longer look at either the traffic light or the vertical sign but will do what the policeman tells us. The vehicle that encounters the RIGHT-OF-WAY sign in alternating one-way traffic must obviously stop if an emergency vehicle approaches from ahead. The vehicle that encounters the GIVE WAY sign in alternating one-way traffic must instead stop if another vehicle approaches from the opposite direction, to which it must yield. However, you should not stop if, in conjunction with the vertical signal, there is a traffic light with a green light, or if a traffic officer, if present, indicates to you to pass. In both cases, I recommend that you use caution, both with the yield sign and the right-of-way sign in alternating one-way traffic, and moderate your speed appropriately to be able to do the right thing in complete safety. Let's now switch signals and move on to this one, a danger sign with a rather long name; I like to call it "END of one-way traffic, and BEGINNING of two-way traffic." Like virtually all danger signs, it is typically placed at least one hundred and fifty meters before the point where the danger begins indicated by the sign itself. And in this case, the sign tells us that one-way traffic on the road we are on is about to end, and that two-way traffic is about to begin, and therefore that soon we will also encounter vehicles traveling in the opposite direction to us. Since two-way traffic is undoubtedly more dangerous, a warning sign is used to convey this type of information. It's a triangular sign with an upward-pointing vertex, a red frame, and a drawing inside that represents the type of danger. This sign may also have a yellow background, in which case it would be a temporary sign, used during construction. There's one maneuver in particular that we'll need to be much more careful about after this sign: overtaking. It's much easier and safer to do on one-way streets, but much more dangerous on two-way streets. There's also a sign that says the opposite: "End of two-way traffic, beginning of one-way traffic." This one, specifically, is called "one-way traffic." And as you can clearly see, in this case, a warning sign wasn't used, but rather an indication sign, because, as mentioned previously, one-way streets are much safer than two-way streets.
