I don’t know if it was instinct or love, but instead of telling him to stop, I smiled and asked, “Do you like how it feels?” He nodded, silent and frightened, and in that moment I realized I was the first to witness a secret he hadn’t dared share. It didn’t stay secret for long. Our parents found out not much later … and to my surprise, they didn’t shout, they didn’t punish, they didn’t shame. They asked him if dressing in my clothes made him happy. He whispered yes, and that was enough. They simply nodded and told him he could explore it safely.
