As such, I didn't have any background in the hard sciences when I took the NMAT. According to P. Frost of Columbia University, hard science and soft science are terms used to compare scientific fields on the basis of perceived methodological rigor, exactitude, and objectivity. In this case, the natural sciences (physics, chemistry, biology, astronomy, geoscience) are considered "hard", whereas the social sciences (e.g., archaeology, cultural anthropology, psychology, sociology, economics) are usually described as "soft".
