John O'Malley Sacred Lecture Fall 2018: The New Spirituality of St. Ignatius

On October 4, 2018, Rev. John O’Malley, S.J. (University Professor in the Department of Theology at Georgetown University) delivered the Fall 2018 Dahlgren Chapel Sacred Lecture. The title of Fr. O’Malley’s lecture was The New Spirituality of St. Ignatius. While, today, we have learned to appreciate the movements and textures of Ignatian spirituality, we may not fully appreciate how radical this form of spirituality was in Ignatius’ own day, or how different it was from the more traditional Catholic spiritualities of the time. In his Sacred Lecture, Fr. O’Malley will reflect on the genesis and development of Ignatian spirituality: how it came to be, how it almost disappeared, and how—in the past half-century in particular—it has been recovered. In the end, his lecture will highlight the significance of Ignatian spirituality, and its importance in our lives today.
