The Club Penguin Degenerates
Saint Bernard famously said “The Road to Hell Is Paved With Good Intentions.” I can’t think of a better way to explain what happened to Club Penguin. The original game was launched in October of 2005, defining the childhoods of an entire generation. It was designed as a kid-friendly virtual playground where players could travel throughout the island to make friends, clock in at the pizza parlor, or attend igloo court hearings. Naturally when the site was shut down in 2017, the community wasn’t ready to let go - they launched a number of fan servers with the intention of keeping the magic alive. Unfortunately, many of these servers quickly descended into madness - server owners would hack, dox, and even swat competitors. If players called them out, they would be blackmailed into silence - and worst of all, several site admins exploited the vulnerable playerbase to fulfill their own sick urges. I’m sad to say that in these cases ‘CP’ doesn’t just stand for Club Penguin.
