How to demonstrate good character after a previous conviction or bad record. Why you should include a cover letter with your application. The most common mistakes that can lead to refusal. Very Important – English Language Requirement (B1): A Secure English Language Test (SELT) must be taken at a Home Office approved test centre. Test results are generally valid for two years from the date the test is taken. Once the validity of the test expires, the qualification cannot be relied upon to support a British citizenship application. However, according to the Home Office Naturalisation Guidance, this does not apply where an applicant has successfully been granted Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) on the basis of a B1 level qualification. In those circumstances, the applicant meets the English language requirement for naturalisation and does not need to pass another English language test. This means that a further B1 test is not required for naturalisation, even if the original B1 test has since expired. This also includes applicants who satisfied the English language requirement for ILR because they had already met the B1 requirement for entry clearance or leave to remain. This is a summary of the Home Office Guide AN: Naturalisation as a British Citizen (July 2026, page 19). Always refer to the latest version of the guidance and ensure your individual circumstances meet the relevant requirements before making an application.
