John Donne, Biographical Notes
Dr John Donne (1572-1631) was an English poet, scholar, soldier, and courtier born into a famous recusant family, and suffered for refusing to attend Anglican worship, but who later became a cleric in the Church of England. Under the patronage of James I, he was made Dean of St Paul's Cathedral in London. He is considered the preeminent representative of the metaphysical poets, and one of the leading preachers and learned men of his day.
