HOW TO LEARN BIBLICAL HEBREW WITH MEMORIZATION TECHNIQUES - VISUAL, AUDITORY, AND MOTOR LEARNING Developing Discipline and Perseverance A Latin proverb says: "Festina lente!", "Make haste slowly." Slow but persistent progress is essential for the study of the Hebrew language. Nowhere is this more important than in the study of Biblical Hebrew. Persistence, accompanied by thorough and detailed study, is the first requirement that must be met. For this to become a reality, it will be necessary to dedicate at least half an hour to the study of Biblical Hebrew each day. Remember: 30 minutes of study six days a week (total = 3 hours) is much more effective for learning Hebrew than dedicating four hours to study on a single day of the week. EXERCISING MEMORY Learning Biblical Hebrew becomes easier when done visually, aurally, and motorically at the same time. How can we understand this? 1- "Visual Learning" Visual learning occurs when we look at a word repeatedly to familiarize ourselves with the characters in which it is written. When, for example, we read the Portuguese word "word," we immediately know what the term is. Why? Have we read each of the letters p, a, l, a, v, r, a, one by one? Of course not. We simply look at the word and grasp its unity. We can identify the entire term simply because we are already so familiar with it that our visual memory recognized it without difficulty. Therefore, exercise your visual memory: every time you study new vocabulary, look at it repeatedly. 2- "Auditory Learning" Auditory learning is so called because it involves hearing. And learning out loud: whenever you are studying new vocabulary, a new inflection, conjugation, etc., do it out loud. When study material is reviewed aloud frequently, the sound of the words is imprinted in the auditory memory. It is recommended that auditory and visual memory be exercised together so that they complement each other. 3. "Motor Learning" Motor learning works as follows: every time you want to learn a word or a conjugation, copy it several times. Then, write it down by heart, also several times, always checking that what you've written is free of errors. This will exercise your visual memory and, if what you're writing is read aloud, your auditory memory as well. 4. "Intellectual Memory" Visual, auditory, and motor memory are complemented by intellectual memory. Whenever new study material is presented, analyze it, establishing associations and logical relationships. This includes reasoning about the origin, formation, and composition of a given word, with the aim of understanding how and where it was derived.
